Welcome to IMLA
The International Media Lawyers Association is an international
network of lawyers working in the areas of media law, media freedom and
media policy, and committed to promoting and defending the fundamental
human rights of freedom of expression and freedom of information.
This founding Memorandum of the International Media Lawyers’
Association was developed and approved by the Founding Meetings of the
Association which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia on 22-23 February 2004
and in Belgrade, Serbia, on 5-6 March 2004. A full list of Founder
Members and Interim Steering Committee Members is attached. The
Founding Meetings were the initiative of media lawyers in Eastern Europe
and the Community of Independent States (CIS), in particular by the
alumni of the 2002 and 2003 Oxford Media Law Advocates Summer School,
run by the University of Oxford's Programme in Comparative Media Law and
Policy. The Justice Initiative of the Open Society and the Stanhope
Centre organized the founding meetings, with assistance of the Liberty
Institute in Georgia and the Media Center in Serbia.
